Overflows, Ruptures and Leaks

Call 650-7650. A Utilities Division employee will be dispatched to determine the problem. The City is responsible for breaks in water and wastewater mains in the street, but the property owner or tenant is responsible for breaks on private property.

Backflow Prevention

A "backflow" occurs when there is a clog, either between the residence and a sewage main or within a sewage main in the neighborhood. It is usually caused by such things as obstructions or a buildup of disposed-of material like kitchen grease within a pipe or wastewater main.

Though no system is fail-safe, installation of a "backflow" valve at the residence, which prevents sewage from re-entering the residence, may be advisable. You should consult your plumber to determine the need for, suitability and cost of installing a replacement valve. Information about "backflow" incidents in your neighborhood can be obtained by calling 650-7650. Learn more at City of Winston-Salem, NC: Residential Services
