Mold Contamination
 |
MOLD contamination
became a hot topic several years ago due to the number of claims
and media attention surrounding toxic mold. It’s still
a hot topic because mold is no longer covered in most standard
insurance policies and mold is extremely costly to mitigate.
What are molds?
Molds are fungi. They are present everywhere
- indoors and outdoors. There are more than 100,000 known species
of mold, of which, at least 1000 are common in the U.S. Molds
grow best in warm, damp, humid conditions. Fueled by moisture,
mold spores grow rapidly. When mold problems are not dealt with
quickly and effectively, the problems they cause can multiply
just as rapidly.
| "A
rapid increase in mold claims, followed by universal insurance
exclusions for “mold related claims”, will
create hundreds of thousands of uninsured mold related
losses." |
The truth about mold
Certain areas of our homes and businesses such as bathrooms
and basements are ideal breeding grounds for mold. Leaks and
condensation can trigger growth. Under the right conditions,
even small amounts of moisture can lead to serious mold claims.
There are things you can do to minimize your exposure to mold.
|
What
you can do to prevent mold in your home or business:
• Keep the humidity level
in the house between 40% and 60%.
• Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier during
humid months.
• Be sure the structure has adequate ventilation,
including exhaust fans.
• Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
• Clean bathrooms with mold controlling solutions.
• Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
• Remove or replace previously soaked carpets
and upholstery.
|
If you are faced with a serious mold contamination, it is important
to ask the right questions when selecting the right resource
to handle the remediation. Effective mold remediation requires
a tremendous amount of training and expertise.
